B.C.JAIN JEWELLERS PVT LTD, AJC BOSE ROAD, KOLKATA

Having designed the previous showroom, the owners chose Epsilon to design the new store when they decided to expand the business. Located in the heart of a busy Kolkata street, the design of the store spells opulence & grandeur. Catering to a very high-end clientele, this jewellery store intended to have an ambience that would have a rich, pampered and comfortable experience for the customer whereas a smooth functional work environment for the in house staff.

The square shape of the premises has a rather elongated reception & waiting area that extends towards the showroom on one side and also has a separate entrance leading to the in house office areas. The showroom had to be deliberately kept on the opposite end so as to accommodate the main chambers along with the locker room in the southwestern side owing to Vaastu. Thus, the elongated reception leads into the rectangular showroom area that also accommodates a lounge area at the furthest end and also has access to the back office areas that houses the main chambers, locker room, the karigar rooms, accounts and assortment room for gems amongst others.

The gold steel entrance door leads one into the reception area with a backlit veneer wall on one side and large floor to ceiling mirror on the other wall, that somewhat doubles the otherwise narrow space. The tear drop shaped crystals hanging from the ceiling also leads the way into the showroom as it culminates above the puja space at the opposite end.The entire space is characterized by large floor to ceiling heights. Thus the showroom has marble clad walls with display on both sides that merge seamlessly into the décor and is also a highlight for the same. Visibly, the apparent box like arrangement of the display on one side hanging out of the dark wood fluting is contrasted by the sunken in display amid the white marble surface on the other side. The interesting shape of the decorative gold leaf ceiling mimics itself in the flooring below in the form of a dark marble inlay. The inlay and the decorative ceiling, in a way, leads one into the executive lounge area characterized by a large high gloss wooden door. Reserved for private consultations with clients, the lounge has neo– classical furniture, customized and hand picked from various places in India & abroad, along with the accessories and flowing fabric, all make the ambience very rich and inviting. The coffer ceiling with the crystal chandelier adds to the opulence inside the lounge.

The back office areas have two large chambers alongside the locker room meant for the owners. A plush black marble corridor leads the way in from the showroom. Dark veneer, both in high gloss and matt, compliment and contrast the dark marble flooring with the white ceiling above. The chambers have a wooden floor, white marble and veneer walls with a ceramic tile inlay in the backdrop above the back credenza.

Thus, the marble in its various shades, the reddish dark veneer, different planes on the ceiling, the neo-classical furniture with various pendant lights and accessories that merges the contemporary with the classic, all add up to the rich and opulent experience.

HIGHLIGHTS

Creating an ambience to highlight and position the brand as a premier jewellery store amongst an elite niche clientele was the main highlight of the design. The design demonstrates how classical elements can entwine with modernist influences to achieve a fresh yet timeless retail experience, something that offers a balance of formal & informal spaces, privacy and grandeur coupled with functionality. Maintaining a balance between elegance and functional spaces, crafted with finely detailed rich material finishes, the design reinforces and highlights this very essence. Thus, the powerful visuals display a sense of luxury without compromising on the accessibility and functionality of spaces, similarly, the design also works to fulfil all Vaastu principles and beliefs associated, without compromising on the aesthetic.
